It is coming to the low season but it doesn’t mean we are not busy. In the next few days if the weather and logistics allow us we will set out to go on an exploration day.
We are hoping to find a boat that was sunk in the second world war. The ship named the Hiap Seng Maru was a 120 tons junk carrying rice and sewing machines to Singapore. It was sunk on the 24th of July 1945 by an American submarine, the SS-331 Bugara.
Our research points to a mark that it is about 16 nautical miles or 30km north-east of our base island of Koh Phangan. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack but with our WASSP sounder which has 112 beams and covers a 120 degrees angle and gives a 3D image of the seafloor, it will hopefully be much easier.
Let see what we can find, maybe some other interesting things on the way there, we never know.
Stay tuned for updates on this expedition.
